Capturing the Beauty of a Private Estate Garden on Lake Minnetonka
Some photography assignments feel like stepping into another world. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing the gardens of a breathtaking private estate on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in Wayzata, Minnesota. From the moment I arrived, I sensed that this would be a very special project.
This home, built in the 1890s, carries the charm and grandeur of a European estate. The elegant architecture, expansive grounds, and serene lakefront setting created an atmosphere that felt timeless, like walking through a countryside manor in Provence or Tuscany.
A Wife’s Gift and a Husband’s Garden
This project began with a beautiful request. The estate’s owner, a warm and gracious woman, invited me to capture her husband’s gardens as a special gift.
She walked me through the property, sharing stories about its history and her husband’s passion for the land. As we strolled through the gardens, she explained, “This is my husband’s garden. He has poured his heart into this place for years. I want to have these photographs, just in case someday it is not here.”
Her words moved me. This assignment became more than documenting a space. It became about preserving a living legacy.
A Garden Worthy of an Estate
The gardens immediately impressed me with their beauty and scale. Everywhere I looked, vibrant floral displays surrounded the historic home. Manicured pathways curved through carefully planned plantings, each one showing thoughtful design and care.
I noticed four gardeners working diligently as I explored. They planted, trimmed, and nurtured every corner of the property. Their dedication showed in every detail. The gardens were alive with color and texture, perfectly maintained, and truly spectacular.
Capturing the Grandeur
I approached this shoot with care and intention, capturing the property from several perspectives:

Aerial Perspectives: I launched the drone to capture wide, sweeping views of the property. From above, the symmetry and artistry of the gardens became even more breathtaking.
This multi-layered approach tells a complete story that celebrates both the fine details and the grandeur of this remarkable estate.
Preserving a Moment in Time
This shoot offered more than an opportunity to create beautiful photographs. It became a way to preserve the history, love, and artistry poured into this property. Photography allows us to hold onto beauty, keep memories alive, and share moments that words alone cannot capture.
