Recently, our family spent ten days exploring the South Carolina and Georgia coast while celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. While the milestone itself was special, what truly stood out was the region. The Southeast coast has a way of pulling people into a different rhythm, one centered around connection, beauty, relaxation, and experience.

If you are planning a trip to Hilton Head, Savannah, or the Southeast coast, this guide will help you discover the best places to stay, things to do, restaurants, attractions, beaches, and hidden gems that make this one of the best coastal vacations in the United States.

Why Hilton Head Is One of the Best Southeast Vacation Destinations

Hilton Head Island is one of the premier beach destinations in the Southeast United States, known for its pristine beaches, bike trails, golf courses, family atmosphere, and natural beauty.

Unlike many crowded tourist beach towns, Hilton Head feels peaceful, upscale, and intentionally designed around nature. Massive oak trees, Spanish moss, protected wetlands, and miles of white sand beaches create an atmosphere that immediately helps visitors relax.

The island is ideal for:

  • Family vacations
  • Anniversary trips
  • Romantic getaways
  • Multi-generational travel
  • Beach vacations
  • Nature lovers
  • Golf trips
  • Photography adventures
  • Southern coastal exploration

One of the things that makes Hilton Head special is how easy it is to settle into the island lifestyle. Mornings start slowly. Beach walks become daily rituals. Pool afternoons stretch into sunset dinners. Everything feels calmer here.

Where to Stay in Hilton Head

One of the most important parts of planning a successful Hilton Head vacation is choosing the right place to stay.

For our trip, we stayed at an incredible beach home that became the perfect gathering place for our entire family:

5 Sandy Beach Trail – Beach House w/ Private Pool

The house was absolutely amazing.

Everyone fit comfortably together, which made the experience far more meaningful than splitting everyone into separate hotel rooms. We shared meals together, relaxed by the pool, talked late into the evening, and created the kind of family memories that only happen when everyone is truly together.

Even better, the home was located just one block from Hilton Head’s gorgeous white sand beach.

That convenience completely transformed the trip. Morning sunrise walks, afternoon beach breaks, and evening strolls along the Atlantic became effortless parts of daily life.

The Southeast is filled with incredible vacation homes, beach cottages, coastal retreats, and unique stays that allow you to experience the region in a far more personal and relaxing way than a traditional hotel.

And the beach itself was stunning.

Hilton Head’s famous white sand beaches stretch for miles, especially during low tide. The beaches are wide, clean, family-friendly, and incredibly walkable.

One of the most magical parts of visiting Hilton Head during late spring and summer is witnessing the beginning of loggerhead sea turtle nesting season.

Sea turtles return annually to the South Carolina coast to lay their eggs under the cover of darkness. Hilton Head takes conservation seriously, and visitors quickly notice how much effort the island makes to protect these incredible animals.

For nature lovers, photographers, and families with children, turtle season creates a deeper appreciation for the fragile coastal ecosystem that makes Hilton Head so special.

Best Things to Do in Hilton Head

Explore Harbor Town

Harbor Town Hilton Head Travel Guide

No Hilton Head vacation is complete without visiting Harbour Town Lighthouse.

Harbor Town is one of the most iconic destinations on the island. The famous lighthouse overlooks a vibrant marina filled with sailboats, restaurants, shops, live music, and waterfront energy.

It perfectly captures the relaxed sophistication that defines Hilton Head.

We spent time:

  • Walking the marina
  • Exploring shops
  • Eating ice cream
  • Enjoying putt-putt golf
  • Watching boats enter the harbor
  • Simply soaking in the atmosphere

It feels like the kind of place people imagine when they dream about a classic coastal vacation.

Take a Dolphin Tour

One of the absolute highlights of our trip was booking an excursion with:

Dolphin Discoveries Hilton Head Charters & Adventures

The tour was incredible.

Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging, funny, and clearly passionate about the region. We saw numerous dolphins swimming freely near the boat, often surprisingly close.

Watching dolphins in the wild along the South Carolina coast is one of those experiences that stays with you long after the vacation ends.

If you are planning a Hilton Head itinerary, this should absolutely be on your list.

Visit the Coastal Discovery Museum

Another hidden gem on Hilton Head is the Coastal Discovery Museum.

In fact, we enjoyed it so much we visited twice.

The museum beautifully tells the story of the island’s ecology, culture, wildlife, and history. The property itself is stunning, filled with oak trees, trails, marsh views, and gardens.

One of the highlights during our visit was the farmers market.

We purchased:

  • Fresh South Carolina peaches
  • Sweet-covered pecans
  • Local treats and artisan products

Experiences like this reveal the authentic side of Hilton Head beyond the resorts and beaches.

Best Seafood in Hilton Head

Fresh seafood is one of the defining experiences of the Southeast coast.

One of our favorite discoveries was Benny Hudson Seafood.

We purchased fresh shrimp and local fish to grill back at the house, creating some of the best meals of the entire trip.

There is something deeply satisfying about cooking fresh coastal seafood while surrounded by family after a long beach day.

Another must-visit restaurant came highly recommended by our dolphin tour guide:

The Sea Shack

The Sea Shack turned out to be one of the best local seafood spots on the island.

This is the kind of authentic coastal dive restaurant travelers dream about finding:

  • Casual atmosphere
  • Incredible seafood
  • Packed with locals
  • Unpretentious and unforgettable

Sometimes the best meals happen in the least flashy places.

Day Trip to Savannah, Georgia

One of the major advantages of staying in Hilton Head is proximity to Savannah.

Savannah makes an incredible day trip or overnight extension to any Hilton Head vacation.

Where Hilton Head offers beach relaxation and coastal nature, Savannah offers:

  • Historic architecture
  • Southern culture
  • Art and creativity
  • Incredible parks
  • Restaurants and nightlife
  • Rich American history

Savannah feels cinematic from the moment you arrive.

Massive oak trees stretch overhead while Spanish moss drapes across the streets. Cobblestone roads, historic homes, fountains, hidden courtyards, and shaded squares create one of the most visually beautiful cities in America.

Exploring SCAD in Savannah

One of the most inspiring parts of our Savannah visit was exploring Savannah College of Art and Design.

Our daughter-in-law, an art student, introduced us to the school and its story.

SCAD is extraordinary.

The institution has transformed historic Savannah by restoring buildings throughout the city and converting them into vibrant creative spaces. The artistic energy throughout Savannah is deeply connected to SCAD’s presence.

For artists, photographers, creatives, and design lovers, Savannah becomes even more fascinating once you understand the influence SCAD has had on the city.

Forsyth Park: The Soul of Savannah

No Savannah trip is complete without visiting Forsyth Park.

The famous fountain serves as the centerpiece of one of the most beautiful urban parks in the Southeast.

Musicians perform beneath the trees. Families picnic on the grass. Artists sketch. Students gather. Couples walk shaded pathways beneath ancient oaks.

Savannah values beauty in a way few American cities still do.

The city invites people to slow down and experience atmosphere.

Why You Must Visit Wormsloe Historic Site

Wormsloe Historic Site Hilton Head Travel Guide
The Spectacular Wormsloe Historic Site – Hilton Head Travel Guide

One of the most unforgettable experiences of the entire trip was visiting:

Wormsloe Historic Site

After seeing photographs of Wormsloe while exploring Savannah earlier in the week, I immediately knew we had to visit.

And somehow, it exceeded expectations.

The entrance road alone is breathtaking.

Massive live oak trees form an endless canopy over the road while Spanish moss hangs from the branches like curtains. Sunlight filters through the trees, creating one of the most photogenic landscapes in the entire Southeast.

But Wormsloe is not just beautiful.

It is historically important.

The site was originally settled in the 1730s by Noble Jones, one of Georgia’s earliest colonial settlers who arrived with James Oglethorpe during the founding of the Georgia colony.

Today, visitors can still explore the tabby ruins of the original fortified estate, considered among the oldest standing structures in Georgia.

Walking through Wormsloe feels like stepping backward through American history while simultaneously experiencing one of the most visually stunning natural landscapes in the South.

For photographers, it is absolute paradise.

I captured countless images there because every angle revealed another incredible scene.
