Top 10 Reasons to Fall in Love with Nice France

Have you ever had an opportunity to visit a place that you knew nothing about? That is how my visit to Nice was. I knew nothing about Nice. That is why I have created this list for you, Top 10 Reasons to Fall in Love with Nice France.

Yes, Anne had done research for this trip and a travel agent had helped us plan the entire trip to France and Nice was on the list, but I still knew almost nothing about the city and it’s history. Other than the fact that Nice is on the French Riviera, I was coming up blank.

If that is you, you have come to the right place. This list will help to make sure you get to the best places the city has to offer.

Though our son, Mark had traveled along with us through Italy, by the time we had made it to Nice it was time for him to head back to classes in another part of France. As a result, Anne and I were to take on the rest of France ourselves and Nice was only the beginning.

So let’s get going with our list, Top 10 Reasons to Fall in Love with Nice France!

Hotels

Hotel West End

So let’s talk hotels. Our accommodations were absolutely incredible. We stayed at the Hotel West End Nice, which overlooks the Promenade des Anglais or English Promenade, and offers a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea. The staff has maintained the hotel well, and our room, which had balcony with a amazing view, was absolutely wonderful.

Hotel Negresco Nice France

Henri Negresco built this hotel in 1912. The design team decorated the hotel with fine art and huge crystal chandeliers. It is filled with tales from lifestyles of the rich and famous.

This is also the home of the Chantecler Restaurant which is a 2 star Michelin winner.

To get inside you apparently at least have to have a meal reservation. We were not hungry at the time but it would certainly would be worth your time and energy to go in and take a look around.

Wonderful Food

Our first adventure sans Mark was to search for dinner. Being this was our first night in France we imagined that we would be experiencing French cuisine. As we sought out a place to eat (on a Sunday night), it appeared all the French restaurants were closed. We would soon come to realize that many “French” places close down on Sunday’s, as it is apparent that family time on Sunday’s is a staple of French culture.

Traveling requires flexibility, so we ate Italian again. I should really have said that we “got” to eat Italian again however, because the food was incredible.

We stopped at a wonderful mom and pop restaurant called Buenvento. We ate a slow and restful dinner.

The main point here is that when we were in France all the food was delicious. Wherever you go, you will most likely be amazed with something delectable.

Promenade des Anglais English Promenade

Promenade des Anglais, literally translated, the Walkway of the English, is approximately a 4.5 mile walkway along the Mediterranean Sea and contains some of the most beautiful picturesque places in Nice.

Along the walk you will have plenty of options for shopping, eating or enjoy resting on the beach. We walked along this route as we headed to Castle Hill and it was peaceful and enchanting.

Castle Hill (Colline du Chateau)

Our first tour on our first full day was the must-see Castle Hill walking tour.

The hill, located above Nice’s Old Town, is about 150 feet above the sea-level. It made for a perfect strategic and military lookout over Nice’s Bay. The castle, used between the 11th and 18th century, was destroyed in 1706, but the ruins still give a sense of the great history that once was.

Furthermore, the lookout on the hill provides a fantastic view for taking great photos of the beautiful city.

Port Lympia of Nice

Constructed in 1748, this port has been an important part of the life of this region for centuries.

It is a center of manufacturing, transportation, fishing, and recreation. Even now you see giant sea going cruise vessels docked in the large beautiful port.

Castle Cemetery Cimetière du Château

The next stop on our walking tour was the Castle Cemetery.

Do you have an odd fascination with cemeteries? If you do, you will love this one.

The cemetery, a burial site for such notables as opera singer Louis Feuillade, film director Alexander Herzen, and novelist Gaston Leroux, was our first look at the old French burial style of extravagant grave sites that resided above the ground or very shallow in the ground.

The Castle Cemetery is widely regarded as the most beautiful in France. The statues are quite impressive, and it is peaceful place that allows one to get away from the hussle of Nice.

One we had enough of the peacefulness of the Castle Cemetery, it was time to head back to the action.

Old Town Nice

Nice’s Old Town (or Vieux Nice in French), is one of the city’s biggest attractions and it is a definite must-see for anyone who wants to experience all of what Nice has to offer.

Old Town’s many churches, bustling markets, boutique shops and fabulous restaurants make this a lively part of the city both day and night. After finishing the day in this incredible part of the city, it was time to turn in for the evening, and rest before taking on the next day.

Promenade du Paillon Fountains

This area is a public park and green space designed by landscape gardener Michel Péna. As we were walking through it, I found myself thinking of Central Park in New York City. It is a place of sanity of the middle of a bustling city.

The giant water mirror and fountains are a delightful highlight. The fountains are activated on a timed system. At times they are off and produce a calm mirror effect on the water. When turned on the fountains become a place of play and refreshment.

St Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Cathedral

Before we finished our day, we stopped in at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. Unbeknownst to us at the time, it is apparently the largest one in Europe, opened in 1012 it has been maintained very well.

The architecture is very typically Eastern Orthodox. The interior is festooned with a huge array of relics. Frankly the place is quite beautiful.
