ToggleDiscovering the Beauty of Puerto Rico: A Family Adventure
When our son and his family decided to spend two months in Puerto Rico, we knew we had to seize the opportunity to visit them and explore the wonders of this Caribbean paradise. What followed was an unforgettable journey filled with stunning beaches, rich history, delicious food, and unique cultural experiences. Here’s a detailed account of our adventure, offering a guide to anyone looking to experience Puerto Rico’s diverse offerings.
First Stop: San Juan

Our trip began in the vibrant capital city of San Juan, where we stayed at the charming Tropica Beach Hotel. Nestled just a stone’s throw away from the beach, this boutique hotel provided a perfect blend of comfort and style. The hotel’s modern aesthetic, friendly staff, and relaxing atmosphere made it an ideal starting point for our Puerto Rican adventure.

From the hotel, we ventured into the historic center of Old San Juan. Walking through this area felt like stepping back in time. Cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and centuries-old fortifications defined the landscape. Among the must-see attractions were:
El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro): This imposing fortress, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, offers panoramic views and a fascinating look at Puerto Rico’s military history.

La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area is steeped in history, showcasing the island’s strategic importance during the colonial era.

Plaza de Armas: A lively square perfect for people-watching and soaking up the city’s ambiance.

Calle Fortaleza (Umbrella Street): Famous for its vibrant installations, this street is a favorite photo spot for visitors.

Food is integral to any trip, and we savored authentic Puerto Rican cuisine at the highest-rated local restaurant on Google. Dishes like mofongo (a garlicky mash of fried plantains), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), and fresh seafood highlighted the island’s culinary heritage.
Exploring El Yunque Rainforest

No trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without visiting El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. We joined a one-day guided tour that immersed us in the lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant biodiversity of this natural treasure.

Highlights included:
La Coca Falls: A picturesque waterfall near the forest entrance.

Yokahú Tower: A climb up this tower rewarded us with sweeping views of the forest canopy.
Báano Grande: This serene natural pool was perfect for cooling off.
The tour was both educational and exhilarating, revealing the importance of preserving such ecosystems.
Cabo Rojo: A New Home Base
After our time in San Juan, we headed west to Cabo Rojo, where we stayed at Villa Coqui, a charming accommodation that felt like a true home away from home. Cabo Rojo offered a more laid-back vibe, perfect for immersing ourselves in the local culture and natural beauty.
Boquerón Beach Town Southwest Puerto Rico

Boquerón is a picturesque beach town located in Cabo Rojo, on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches, and vibrant local culture, Boquerón is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists seeking a relaxing getaway.

Our days were filled with visits to local beaches, each offering crystal-clear waters and a sense of serenity. We also experienced the joy of sailing at the Boquerón Sailing School, where the local instructors shared their expertise and love for the sea. This was not only a fun activity but also a fantastic way to appreciate Puerto Rico’s stunning coastline.
Buyé Beach Resort

We also made time to explore Buyé Beach, a popular destination near the town of Cabo Rojo.

The pristine white sands and calm waters made it a family-friendly spot for relaxation and swimming.

Beyond the beach, the area offered:
Playa Sucia (La Playuela): Known for its rugged beauty and proximity to Cabo Rojo Lighthouse.

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos): A historic structure with breathtaking views of the cliffs and ocean.

Bosque Estatal de Boquerón: This state forest provided a serene escape with its diverse flora and fauna. We walked its trails, soaking in the natural beauty and learning about the area’s ecological importance.
Sandra Farms Coffee: A Journey into Puerto Rican Coffee Culture

One of the most unique experiences of our trip was visiting Sandra Farms Coffee. Located in the hills near Adjuntas, this family-owned coffee farm is a testament to resilience and passion.
- History and Legacy: Sandra Farms has been producing high-quality coffee for years, focusing on sustainable practices and fair trade principles.
- Hurricane Impact: Like much of Puerto Rico, the farm faced significant challenges from recent hurricanes, which damaged crops and infrastructure. Yet, the owners’ determination has kept the operation thriving.
- Farm Tour: The tour offered insights into coffee cultivation and processing. We sampled freshly brewed coffee, which was some of the best we’ve ever tasted.
- Challenging Roads: Reaching the farm was an adventure in itself. Narrow, winding roads added an element of excitement to our journey, making the coffee we enjoyed there all the more rewarding.
A Cultural Stop in Ponce

Our trip concluded in Ponce, Puerto Rico’s “Pearl of the South.” This city is a cultural and architectural gem, offering visitors a chance to delve into the island’s artistic and historical roots. Highlights of our visit included:
Plaza Las Delicias: The city’s central square, surrounded by historic buildings and a hub of local activity.
Parque de Bombas: A brightly colored former firehouse turned museum, it’s one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic landmarks.
Museo de Arte de Ponce: Renowned for its collection of European and Puerto Rican art, this museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts.
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe: A beautiful cathedral that stands as a spiritual and architectural centerpiece of the city.

We ended our Ponce visit with a walk along the waterfront, reflecting on our journey through this enchanting island.

From the vibrant streets of San Juan to the tranquil shores of Cabo Rojo, and from the rainforest’s lush greenery to the cultural richness of Ponce, every moment was an unforgettable adventure.
