Introduction to Hunt’s Photo & Video

A few years ago I was chatting with John Gregor of Cold Snap Photography in Two Harbors, MN on Lake Superior. I was asking him about a Filter System for my camera. He gave me a recommendation and sent me to “His Guy”. He gave me the contact information for Alan Samiljan of Hunt’s Photo & Video out of New England.

I thought to myself, why in the world would I go to Alan when I could just search on the internet and find anything that I want? Why indeed. John convinced me to contact him.

I was looking to get a set of Neutral Density (ND) Filters that would allow me to get some very long exposure images in the middle of the day. Take a look at these examples to get an idea of what I was attempting to do.

Weisman Art Museum

This image of the Weisman Art Museum designed by the brilliant Frank Gehry at the University of Minnesota, is an attempt to capture this amazing piece of architecture but it needed something extra to make the image that much more spectacular.

I needed a day with some clouds and then take the image with a 10 or so minute exposure allowing all the clouds to flow buy creating that smooth milky sky. In order to do that, I would need to stack several different ND filters to block out basically all the light.

Secondly, I wanted to capture that same smooth milky feel that I captured in the sky in the image above, in the water of a beautiful mountain lake while we were up in Banff National Park Alberta Canada.

Again, I would need multiple filters stacked to block out much of the light.

I had looked all over the internet; I had read all the reviews of filter systems and by this time I was getting very confused. In general these types of filters are quite expensive and the price varies pretty widely but that price swing is not necessarily based on the quality.

When I contacted Alan, he immediately understood exactly what I was attempting to do and he had the perfect recommendation for the quality and price level I wanted.

Alan recommended the VU DN Filter System for me. What would he recommend for you?

You see, at Hunt’s, and with their amazing staff like Alan, it is all about the personal care and customer focus. Alan is building a lifetime relationship with his customers.

Second Experience with Hunt’s Photo

The second time I experienced Hunt’s was on a trip to Boston. We were touring New England visiting some family and we were going to be taking in as many sights as possible. Of course as a photographer I was going to be attempting to capture as many images as possible along the way.

The first day of the trip was relatively uneventful, but on the second day came quite a surprise. We woke up expecting to have a very full day. I realized that after charging the batteries for all my cameras and devices, I had put my camera battery in backwards and now it was stuck. My camera would not work and I was in a panic.

I had to get my camera fixed. Pictures were one of the main reasons for doing this trip.

Take a deep breath and think. Then I remembered Hunt’s Photo was in Boston. After the first amazing experience I had had with Hunt’s, they were the first camera resource that came to mind.

So I searched for a store close by. Shazam, there was one right over by Fenway Park which was planned to be our first stop of the morning.

We called an Uber and got right over to the shop. They fixed my camera in moments and it was at No Charge.

They had me over the barrel, I would have paid anything to have my camera fixed and they happily did it for nothing. I was elated.

Can you see why I love them so much??
